Our Proactive Winter Gritting Service...

Winter gritting is carried out on a proactive basis from October to April each year. During this period, we subscribe to the IceQuest service provided by WeatherQuest, which offers detailed, site-specific weather forecasts to support our winter operations. We operate across the East of England.

Each day, PDF reports are generated and distributed twice daily via email to both our winter gritting team and clients. These reports include:

  • Predicted road surface temperatures

  • Forecasted snowfall levels

Our Forecasting Tools and Monitoring...

Our winter gritting team also has access to an advanced online portal, which provides:

  • 24-hour and 48-hour forecasts

  • 7-day extended forecasts

  • Monthly trend forecasts

The system uses colour-coded thresholds and icons to highlight when immediate action is required for specific locations. Additionally, the team can access the WQ Radar, which provides real-time weather data, including:

  • Air temperature

  • Dew point levels

  • Precipitation levels

  • Road surface conditions

Our Monitoring and Response Arrangements...

This information is continuously monitored throughout the day by both the Company Director and the winter gritting team to ensure timely and effective responses.

  • When the site-specific forecast predicts that road surface temperatures will fall to 0°C or below, and before ice formation, a gritting operation is scheduled.

  • In accordance with our specifications, snow clearance is carried out immediately after snowfall, followed by gritting to prevent refreezing.

  • Gritting is based on both temperature and precipitation predictions:

    • If precipitation is forecast, gritting is timed to ensure it is effective before both freezing and precipitation occur.

    • If no precipitation is forecast, gritting can be performed at any time prior to the surface temperature falling below 0°C.

Our gritting teams maintain constant communication, operating 7 days a week, to ensure coordinated and efficient winter safety measures across all sites.

Our Vehicles, equipment and HTRACK tracking systems...

HillTip Spreaders are attached to the rear of our vehicles. We also have snowploughs which can be attached to the vehicles, these are used where heavy snow clearance is required in larger areas. Vehicles are all fitted with HTRACK which is an online tracking system for spreaders and snow ploughs, this allows us to monitor the location and activity of our salt spreaders and snow ploughs from our devices. These reports are automatically sent to our client and provide details of where the vehicles have carried out gritting and snow clearance on site. The reports are time-stamped.
